Garcia, Alvina
Born in 1943, Alvina Garcia is a potter from Santo Domingo Pueblo. She learned how to make pottery as she grew up, watching and working with her mother, Virginia Lovato, and grandmother, Santana Moquino. She taught her daughters, Melinda and Frances, to make pottery, too. She became active in the marketplace in the 1960s.
Alvina is known for her polychrome and black-on-cream dough bowls, jars and vases. Her favorite designs are traditional Santo Domingo designs: butterflies, leaves and deer.
