Martinez, Anita Pino

Anita Pino Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo was the daughter of Adam and Santana Martinez. She was the mother of Barbara Gonzales and Kathy Sanchez. She was an active potter beginning in the 1940s, making pottery almost until she passed away in 1992.

Anita liked to make black-on-black and carved blackware with a brown matte background. Her favorite shapes to make were bowls, jars, seed pots and oval lidded boxes, some with bear head effigy lids.

Anita was a participant at Santa Fe Indian Market from 1981 to 1991. In those years she earned multiple First, Second and Third Place ribbons for bowls, jars, canteens and non-traditional pieces.
