Lovato, Anna Marie
Born into Tesuque Pueblo in 1954, Anna Marie Torivio Lovato became a potter from Santo Domingo Pueblo. Her parents were Manuel and Vicentita Vigil of Tesuque. They were figure makers: nacimientos and storytellers. After she married, she moved to her husband’s home at Santo Domingo and learned the Santo Domingo way to make and decorate pottery. At Santo Domingo it’s against their religion to make figures.
Anna became active in the marketplace in 1978. She made mostly polychrome jars, dough bowls and pitchers. She generally decorated them with geometric designs. She often signed her pieces: Anna MT Lovato SDP.
Art Vigil, a potter from Tesuque Pueblo, is her son. When he was old enough, he returned to his grandparents’ home at Tesuque and learned how to make figures by working with them.
