Lewis, Anne

Born September 16, 1925, to Toribio and Lucy Lewis of Acoma Pueblo, Anne Lewis-Hansen passed on February 27, 2016.

After she graduated from Grants High School in 1944, Anne took on a job as a “Harvey Girl” and started her new life in Barstow, California. She made her way to San Francisco where she worked in the shipyards at the end of World War II. It was in San Francisco that she met and married her husband, Albert Hansen.

Anne graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in History and English. She was also a card-holding member of the American Indian Movement and an activist who had protested on Alcatraz Island. She was an accomplished Acoma Pueblo potter and often presented demonstrations on traditional Pueblo pottery making at Bay Area colleges and art shows. She was a participant in the Santa Fe Indian Market for many years. She was an active member of the San Jose Indian Community, serving on the Indian Health Board of Santa Clara Valley for 20 years.
