Baca, Annie
Annie Baca was born to Cresencia Tafoya and Carmelita Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo in 1941. She grew up in a household of potters and learned from all of them. Among her siblings were Harriet Tafoya, Mark Tafoya and Pauline Martinez.
Annie was a traditional Santa Clara potter, although she preferred to paint her pieces rather than carve them. Annie has long been known for her finely painted and well-polished black-on-black pottery.
Annie’s sister Pauline married Maria Martinez‘ son George and moved to his home at San Ildefonso. Annie and Pauline were close, Annie’s work may have been influenced a bit by what Pauline and George may have shared with her. Santa Clara and San Ildefonso have a long history of intermarriage and cross-pollination of pottery styles and techniques.
Between 1981 and 1999, Annie earned multiple blue ribbons at Santa Fe Indian Market for her bowls, wedding vases and miniatures. Some of her work is contained in the object collection of the Heard Museum.
