Sandoval, Antonio

Born in 1971, Antonio Sandoval Trevizo is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He says he is a self-taught artist who began his journey in the 1990s. He married Refugio Mendoza and among their children are Celia Sandoval, Sofia Sandoval, Genoveva Sandoval and Euseboio Chevo Sandoval. Among their grandchildren are Macario Ortiz, Jerardo Tena, Adolfo Fito Tena, Olivia Mora Sandoval, Julio Mora, Armando Silveira, Octavio Tavo Silveira, Sylvia Silveira, Veronica Silveira, Tomasa Silveira, Ismael Sandoval and more.

Antonio learned by watching others, although Juan Quezada Sr. did have a lot of input in Antonio’s work. Antonio’s tall, well shaped and finely painted jars show that Quezada influence.

All his children grew up in a pottery-making household and they learned a lot from him. But they married into so many other potting families that it’s hard to trace most particular learning lineages through the village.
