Moquino, Bernice

Born into Santa Clara Pueblo in May 1970, Bernice Moquino is the daughter of Corn Moquino and Christine (Herrera) Moquino. She learned how to make pottery by watching and working with her father as she grew up. Among her siblings were James, Mark, Melvin, Christopher, Martin, Marvin, Matthew and Michael Moquino.

By the time she was 19, Bernice was making sgraffito blackware and redware, wedding vases, seed pots and turtles with lids for the marketplace. That was the year she earned a Second Place prize at the Oklahoma Indian Art Market. In 1995 she earned a Second Place prize at the Espanola Valley Arts Festival and in 1996, she earned a First Place prize at Espanola Valley. She didn’t disappear then because she was at the Heard Museum Indian Arts Fair & Market in 2016.
