Veale, Billy

Billy Veale was Rose Pacheco‘s Dineh husband. Rose was the daughter of Paulita and Gilbert Pacheco. Rose grew up at Santo Domingo Pueblo watching and working with her parents as they made pottery. Billy learned how from Rose.

Paulita had originally been a silversmith but her eyes gave out. She was advised to try making pottery so she went to her brother, Robert Tenorio, and had him teach both her and Gilbert.

Paulita had more health problems later in life and as her health failed, Rose and Billy stepped in more and more to help both her and Gilbert. Paulita died in 2008, Gilbert in 2010. That’s when Rose and Billy assumed the family pottery business.

Rose and Billy both make, paint and fire pots together but Billy’s have a more Dineh feel to the designs while hers are more Santo Domingo.

William “Drew” Pacheco, famous for his dinosaur designs on traditional Santo Domingo pots, is Rose’s younger brother.
