Carpio, Caroline
Caroline Carpio was born in October 1962 to Sosten Clovis Lucero and Katherine Maria Lucero of Isleta Pueblo. She’s a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts and the University of New Mexico. She’s been a potter for more than 40 years, a sculptor for more than 25.
Caroline started showing her pottery in 1982. In 1984 she began earning a long string of ribbons, including several Best of Division ribbons and Best of Show ribbons. She’s participated in exhibitions like the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum Guild Indian Art Fair & Market, the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show, the Red Earth Festival, the Gallup InterTribal Ceremonial and more, for years.
In 2000 she was awarded a Fellowship by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. In 2012 Caroline was named Artist of the Year by the Indian Arts & Crafts Association.
Caroline makes mostly whiteware and orangeware, melon jars, piki bowls, vases and sculptural pieces. She also works in bronze and the graphic arts. Caroline was commissioned by her tribe to create two large-scale bronze sculptures for the Isleta Resort & Casino.
