Nunez, Cesar

Cesar Nunez is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He and his father, Naty Ortiz, were pioneers in developing the process by which they can paint vibrant colors on a glossy graphite background, fire it and get the results they want.

Since about 2013 Cesar has been collaborating with Gloria Reyes. In 2013 they earned a Third Place ribbon at the annual Concurso Ceramica de Mata Ortiz on a piece they did together. In 2014 he earned a Second Place ribbon and she earned a Third Place ribbon on pieces they did separately. In 2017 they earned a First Place ribbon together, then in 2018 Cesar alone again earned a First Place ribbon. In 2019 he was awarded the First Place ribbon for Innovation.
