Renteria, Cruz

Cruz Renteria is a potter living and working in Barrio Americano in Mata Ortiz, a village in northern Mexico. His wife is Blanca Quezada, also a potter. The Quezada name is a common name in Chihuahua and she is not related to Juan Quezada Sr.

Blanca was taught to make pottery by one of their neighbors, Graciela Gallegos. Cruz probably learned by working with Blanca but they produce very different end-products. She focuses on plates, seed pots and vases while he makes plates and lidded jars.

In 2020 Cruz earned a Second Place ribbon for one of his miniature pieces at the annual Concurso Ceramica de Mata Ortiz. In 2019 he’d earned a Second Place prize for a white polychrome jar at the Concurso.
