Sequi, Cynthia

Hopi potter Cynthia Sequi Komalestewa was born into Sichomovi village in 1954. Her father was Hugh Sequi, her mother from the Hopi Adams family, her sister was Miltona Naha. Her aunt-in-law was Helen Naha.

She said she was first exposed to clay by her maternal grandmother. When she decided to get serious about it, she went to Sylvia Naha and learned how to make pottery from her. But Sylvia used a white slip on her pottery and when Cynthia went on her own, she dropped that, staying with many of the same designs she’d learned from Sylvia but painting them directly on the base clay body.
