Garcia, Derrick

Derrick James Garcia was born into Santa Clara Pueblo in February 2009. His family lineage is Santa Clara, Ohkay Owingeh and Acoma Pueblo. Derrick has been making pots since he was 7. He said he’s been learning from his grandparents, Effie and Orville Garcia. When we asked him where he gets his inspiration from there was no hesitation: “Grandma” he said with a big smile.

Derrick doesn’t have much of a body of work yet but he has participated in the Pottery Youth Division of Santa Fe Indian Market and earned at least one ribbon already.

His favorite shape to make is the bowl (like grandma makes), and he loves to carve diamond shapes and curving lines in his pieces.

What Derrick (and Effie and Orville) want the world to know about Derrick is that he’s a baseball player and he lives for baseball season.
