Lopez, Edmundo

Edmundo Lopez Aldovaz is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He specializes in painting geometric eye-dazzler designs on otherwise plain black graphite jars.

Edmundo learned to make pottery in the mid 1980s from his brother-in-law, Macario Ortiz.

Edmundo’s pots are a bit hard to find because he’s also a home builder in Nuevo Casas Grandes and he spends a lot of his time there. He taught his wife, Luz Elva Ramirez de Lopez, to make pots, too. Her pieces are very similar to his but smaller: she almost never makes anything more than five inches in height.
