Olivas, Eduardo

Eduardo Olivas is a second-generation potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. Like his brothers Jesus and Martin, Eduardo mostly produces polychrome jars decorated with sgraffito and painted bird, branch and geometric designs. The three brothers all learned to make pottery from their uncle, Eduardo Quintana. No matter what the design is on the rest of the piece, all of them incise several bands of feather and geometric designs from the inner rim up over the rim and down onto the neck.

Eduardo signs most of his pieces: Eduardo Olivas Quintana. In 2019 he earned the First Place prize at the annual Concurso Ceramica de Mata Ortiz for a sgraffito design. In 2020 he earned a Second Place ribbon at the Concurso for more of his sgraffito design.
