Pedregon, Enrique
Enrique Pedregon Ortiz is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. He is listed in the books The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz and The Miracle of Mata Ortiz. His designs have been described as a mix of “ancient Zapotec symbols in a Byzantine style.”
Enrique started learning how to make and decorate pottery when he was fifteen. His teachers were his parents, Teodora Ortiz and Reynaldo Pedregon. Felix Ortiz was his uncle. Like most second-generation potters in Mata Ortiz, Enrique is a better potter than either of his parents.
Enrique is known mostly for small, polychrome jars with intricate painted designs on a tannish-brown clay. He has developed a distinctive style with intricate banded designs.
Enrique likes to participate in the matachines dances during religious holidays in Barrio Porvenir.
