Browning, Florence
Florence Chavarria Browning was a potter from Santa Clara Pueblo. Her parents were Pablita Chavarria and Jose Chavarria. Among her siblings were Clara Shije, Reycita Naranjo, Elizabeth Naranjo, Mary Singer and Stella Chavarria.
Like her sisters, Florence learned how to make pottery by watching and working with their mother as she grew up. However, after she finished her schooling, she worked for the Indian Health Service for many years. It was only after she retired from that that she was able to produce much pottery.
Florence produced mostly carved bowls, jars and wedding vases. She did pottery-making demonstrations in the summer at Bandelier National Monument. She was one of the Santa Clara potters included in the One Space/Three Visions exhibit at the Albuquerque Museum in 1979. Florence was also a regular participant in the Santa Fe Indian Market for more than a decade.
