Cota, Gerardo
Gerardo Cota Guillen is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He learned how to make pottery by watching and working with Juan Quezada Sr., one of the originators of the Paquimé Revival pottery Mata Ortiz has become famous for. He has credited Juan with fostering his meticulous approach to detail and teaching him how to use curvilinear designs.
Unusual for a potter in Mata Ortiz, Gerardo has said that he already has a design in mind before he starts to make the piece. Then he makes the piece to fit the design.
