Pedregon, Gerardo

Gerardo Pedregon and Macaria Ortiz are a husband-and-wife team of potters from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. Gerardo learned from his brother, Enrique, while Macaria was taught by her father, Macario Ortiz, who’d learned from his father, Felix Ortiz, one of the Mata Ortiz originals.

Gerardo and Macaria share in making the pots and decorating them. Usually, Gerardo paints a multi-colored matte design on a piece, then Macaria does the etching. If there is stippling or any other treatment added, Macaria does that, too. Then Gerardo fires the pieces.
