Quintana, Hector

Hector Quintana is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He’s also the husband of Lupita Quezada. There is virtually no other information available about him but his work is very similar to the work of Martin Olivas (Quintana), Jesus Olivas (Quintana) and Eduardo Olivas (Quintana).

While the others often like to carve, paint and incise pottery that is first a glossy graphite black color, Hector seems to prefer white-body pots that he then slips and paints to get the base colors that he etches and paints to get his final designs. Another element that identifies Hector with the Quintana family learning tree is in the bands of black and red with sgraffito geometric designs around the rim.
