Rodriguez, Humberto Guillen

Humberto Guillen Rodriguez is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He often colors a white body pot with various colored slips, then he cuts the outlines of the major elements of his design with a sharp knife and removes the rest with a dental tool and a sharpened nail. His polychrome designs often include fish, iguanas and serpents. His black-on-white jars usually include desert nature scenes and Aztec or Mayan warriors.
