Garcia, Jason

Jason Okuu Pin Garcia is an artist from Santa Clara Pueblo. He was born in 1973 to parents John and Gloria Goldenrod Garcia and he grew up in an arts-oriented household. When he debuted in the marketplace, he came out with some very innovative ideas and designs.

Jason’s art blends ancient Pueblo designs, stories and scenery with images taken from today’s pop culture. In one of his acclaimed early pieces he replaced the illustrations from the cover of the “Grand Theft Auto” video game with scenes from the Pueblo life around him. Then he did the Tewa Tales of Suspense series where he documented important historic Pueblo events in a narrative, using clay tiles in a comic book style. He also expanded his focus to include printmaking via the Map(ping) Project at Arizona State University.

Jason participated in several significant exhibitions including Comic Art Indigene at both the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. He also participated in Native Pop! at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
