Lozano, Jesus

Jesus Lozano is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He has the distinction of being the only potter in Mata Ortiz to do something similar to the “Santa Clara” style of deep carving. He started out, though, making small, highly polished glossy black pieces.

Santa Clara-style carving requires a thick wall and virtually all Mata Ortiz pottery is made with thin walls, too thin to survive deep carving. Needless to say, Jesus digs his own clay and makes his own pots.
