Garcia, JoAnn Chino
JoAnn (Chino) Garcia was born into Acoma Pueblo in 1961. Her mother was Carrie Chino Charlie but she was raised by her grandmother, Marie Z. Chino. In Marie’s house, there was always someone working on pottery. JoAnn learned how to make pottery while growing up, watching and working with everyone around her.
Among JoAnn’s siblings are Hubert, Grace, Kevin and Chris Clarissa. She married Lawrence Garcia and their children are Lawrence Jr., Zachary and Trystyn Garcia.
Some of her pottery can be seen at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
JoAnn made her first piece of pottery when she was around nine years old. In 1974 she was 13 when some of her work was included in the Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery exhibit at the Maxwell Museum at the University of New Mexico.
JoAnn mostly makes polychrome and Mimbres-Revival black-on-white jars and bowls. She tends to favor the designs of her aunt Grace Chino when she paints.
