Roller, Jordan
Jordan Roller was born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1987. His father was Jeff Roller, his grandmother Toni Roller, his great-grandmother Margaret Tafoya. He was surrounded by some of the best of Santa Clara Pueblo’s potters as he was growing up and he put his hands in the clay early in life. However, it wasn’t until he returned from college that he got serious about it.
After college Jordan got together with his grandmother, father and brother (Ryan Roller) and learned everything he could. They all felt he had a unique ability and his pieces reflect that.
Jordan likes to make unique forms and carve them with stylized designs based on ancient designs. His carving is very distinct with wide spaces and finely carved thin lines. He also often uses matte paints on his highly polished surfaces for more effect. He has the firing process down to the point where he knows exactly when to pull a pot from the heat to preserve a particular shade in the color of the clay.
Some of Jordan’s work was included in the Seven Generations of Mastery exhibit at Fox Pueblo Pottery in Santa Fe in 2015.
