Ponce, Jorge

Jorge Ponce is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He usually works with his wife, Elsa Ledezma, in making pottery. Like many Mata Ortiz potting families, she makes the pots and he paints them.

Elsa likes to use the terra-cota red clay Mata Ortiz is famous for when making her pots. Jorge paints his designs in what is known as the Porvenir style, in contradistinction to the Quezada style. The Porvenir style means a piece is virtually covered with design from top to bottom. In the Quezada style, the painter leaves lots of white space to accent the main design.
