Almeraz, Jose

Jose Almeraz grew up in a family of potters in the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico he but didn’t make any pottery himself until he finished school, about 2015. Then he quickly developed a style all his own and has done well since.

His style involves applying several layers of different colored slips to a clay body. Then he etches his designs lightly. Depending on how deeply he etches, different colors will peek through. He sometimes paints lines between the colors he’s exposed with his knife, too.

Jose seems to like nature, wildlife and underwater scenes. He also does Day of the Dead designs with skulls, flowers and geometrics.
