Shije, Juanita

Born at Acoma Pueblo, Juanita Shije (1929- ) married a man from Zia Pueblo and moved to his home there. At Zia, her mother-in-law showed her the Zia way to make pottery and taught her Zia designs. She mostly made matte polychrome jars and decorated them with roadrunners, rainbows and Zia water and cloud images.

Juanita is the mother of potters Yvonne Shije Grayson and Cornelia J. Shije.
