Ledezma, Julio

Julian Julio Ledezma (d. 2015) of Mata Ortiz was the husband of Rosa Ponce. Among Julio’s siblings were Yoly Ledezma, Antonio Ledezma, Elsa Ledezma and Humberto Ledezma. They all learned how to make pottery from their parents, Ramona Jacquez and Priciliano Ledezma, as they were growing up.

Members of the Ledezma and Jacquez families were among the earliest potters in Mata Ortiz. One of their trademark designs is the cuadrillo, a form of checkerboard well adapted to curved surfaces and, generally, black-on-red coloring, maybe with white dots, maybe criss-crossed with blue lines… The variations and designs possible are endless.
