Sando, Kenneth James

Kenneth James Sando was born into Jemez Pueblo in December 1963. His parents were Lawrence and Juanita Gonzales Sando. He learned to make pottery from his grandmother, with inspiration and pointers from friends Gabriel Cajero and Donald Chinana. He, in turn, taught his sister, Wilma Gachupin.

Kenneth makes polychrome and black-on-white jars and bowls. He also makes Jemez storytellers, Corn Maidens and koshare, bear and turtle figures. He’s earned First and Second Place ribbons at the New Mexico State Fair and at the Gallup InterTribal Ceremonial.

Kenneth usually signs his pieces: KJ Sando Jemez.
