Tafoya, Laura

Laura Tafoya Pino was born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1949. She mostly produced carved blackware, some with a green slip. She usually made bowls, jars and plates. Her favorite design to carve was the avanyu (the mythic Tewa water serpent). She often collaborated with Madeline Tafoya and with Tony Lee.

Laura participated in the Santa Fe Indian Market most years from 1985 to 1998. She earned a First Place ribbon for a jar and another First Place ribbon for a bowl in 1988. Her next ribbon was an Honorable Mention for a miscellaneous carved or incised piece in 1998. She also participated in the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show from about 1994 to 1998 but we haven’t found any record of ribbons earned there.
