Lela and Van

Evangelio (Van) Gutierrez and Lela Naranjo Gutierrez were a husband-and-wife team of potters from Santa Clara Pueblo. They were well-known for the quality (and whimsicality) of their pottery but what made their pottery most memorable was the color palette and design vocabulary they developed.

After Van died, Lela continued making pottery in collaboration with their son, Luther (Lela+Luther). After Lela died, Luther continued making pottery in collaboration with his sister, Margaret Rose (Margaret/Luther). After Luther died, Margaret continued making pottery with Luther’s granddaughter, Stephanie Naranjo.
