Pino, Lorencita

Lorencita Pino (1899-1986) was one of the last few potters at Tesuque Pueblo. She was also one of the best known. Ga-de-ge Po-qui was her Tewa name. It means Rising Leaves Lake. Her mother, Nimpha Cajete of Santa Clara Pueblo, had married Miguel Herrera of Tesuque and, contrary to Puebloan tradition, moved to his home. In turn, Lorencita Herrera married Juan Isidro Pino (1895-1953), also of Tesuque.

Lorencita made animals and Rain Gods when those were in vogue but she also made larger polychrome and blackware jars and bowls. Most of those were plain but some she sculpted faces, lizards and frogs onto their surfaces. She also made some micaceous jars. Later in her life her son, Joe D. Pino, painted some of her pieces.
