Rodriguez, Luis Armando
A potter from the village of Mata Ortiz, like his younger brother Abraham, Luis Armando Rodriguez learned to make pottery from his father, Armando Rodriguez and his sister, Leticia. His sometimes-sculpted pottery is decorated with painted, lightly carved and sgraffito designs drawn from Mogollon-Mimbres designs he’s found on ancient potsherds littering the ground in the vicinity of the pre-historic city of Paquimé in the northern state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
Luis mostly uses red, white and black mineral paints on pots of red, white or black. He’s earned several prizes for his pottery through his participation in the annual Concurso Ceramica de Mata Ortiz.
