Aragon, Lupe

Lupe (Rey) Aragon (1905-1980) was an Acoma Pueblo potter. She was born to Bautista and Doloritas Rey but Doloritas was never recorded as being a potter. There is no record of where or how Lupe learned to make pottery but in those days, the women of a family would often get together and show each other how to make things out of clay. However it happened, she married Jose J. Aragon and became an active potter from the 1920s into the 1980s.

Lupe was the mother of Florence Aragon and Rachel Aragon. Lupe taught both Florence and Rachel how to make pottery as they were growing up. Later she taught Florence’s son, John F. Aragon, too.

Some of Lupe’s work was part of the 1977 Indian Arts and Crafts Show at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. In 1979 some of her work was included in the One Space, Three Visions exhibit at the Albuquerque Museum. She seems to have preferred to make traditional polychrome fineline jars and bowls.
