Concho, Lupe

Lupe (Garcia) Concho (1882-1982) was the daughter of Juan Pablo and Marie Garcia. She grew up watching her mother making pottery, learning by watching and helping. Shortly after she married John Concho, she, too, began producing pottery for the marketplace. She was active from around 1940 into the 1980s, mostly producing traditional Acoma black-on-white and polychrome jars, bowls and figures.

Among her daughters were Florence Waconda, Ruby Shroulote, Doris Patricio and Rita Malie. Beverly Victorino is her granddaughter. As her mother had done, Lupe showed her daughters and granddaughter how to make pottery the traditional way, too.
