Romero, Maria P

Maria Priscilla Romero was a potter from Cochiti Pueblo. Born in 1936, she became active in the marketplace relatively late in life, around 1979.  She mostly made storyteller figures, like she learned to make from her mother, Maggie Chalan, and her mother-in-law, Teresita Romero. Teresita was the grandmother of Mateo and Diego Romero.

Some of Maria’s storytellers were frog figures, some were bears. She also made some nativities. In turn, Maria taught Rose M. Brown and Mary Eunice Ware, her daughter, how to make pottery the traditional way. Maria passed on in 2020.
