Toya, Mariam Camilla

Born into Jemez Pueblo in 1974, Mariam Camilla Toya is the daughter of Maxine Toya, sister of Dominique Toya and granddaughter of Marie Romero. Laura Gachupin is her aunt, Gordon Foley a cousin.

Camilla grew up watching and working with her mother and grandmother while they made pottery. When she decided to become a potter on her own, Mariam settled on making melon jars with spiral ribs and butterfly lids.

Mariam was a participant at Santa Fe Indian Market for years, beginning in 1993. She earned a number of ribbons along the way, including the 1993 Best Young Potter Award. In 2019 she earned a Second Place award at Santa Fe Indian Market for a melon jar.
