Navasie, Marianne

A granddaughter of Paqua 1st Frogwoman Naha and daughter of Joy 2nd Frogwoman Navasie, Marianne Navasie was born into her famous Hopi-Tewa family in 1951.

Her grandmother died when she was only 3 but Marianne said she still remembered watching her constantly making pots. Her mother, Joy, also worked with clay continually as Marianne was growing up. Joy taught Marianne everything she knew and Marianne carried on in the family white ware tradition, becoming a full-time potter when she was only 19.

Marianne made mostly jars, bowls and wedding vases, and decorated them with some of the ancient Sikyátki-Revival designs she learned from her mother.

Marianne passed away in 2007. She signed her pieces with a web-toed frog and a tadpole, usually with an “M” next to it.
