Suazo, Marie T
Marie Tenorio Suazo was the daughter of Teresa Gutierrez and granddaughter of Rosita Velarde. Marie learned how to make traditional styles of Santa Clara Pueblo pottery by watching and working with them as she grew up.
Marie was a participant in the Santa Fe Indian Market from the mid-1980s to 1998. In one stretch between 1990 and 1993 she earned at least 8 ribbons, including three First Place ribbons in 1991. That year American Indian Art Magazine published a feature article about her. Marie also participated in the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show in 1996 and 1997.
Marie primarily made bowls, jars, plates and miniatures. Some she carved, some she painted, some she both carved and painted. Her carving was very precise and very deep. She was also known to paint a thin matte outline around her cuts, adding greatly to the visual impact of her pieces.
