Waquie, Marie

Marie Waquie was a potter from Jemez Pueblo. Her work first appeared in the marketplace in the 1970s and she made pottery almost until the day she passed on. She was known for her polished redware with sgraffito designs and matteware with painted geometric designs.

Marie died in a car accident that also killed her husband, Pat Waquie Sr., and two grandchildren, on the I-40 in September, 2019. They were on their way home from a cross-country meet at the Laguna-Acoma High School. Pat was the proprietor of Waquie Propane Service and they had served the Jemez area for decades. Pat Jr., his wife, Lucianne Shendo-Waquie, and their three other children survived the accident.
