Lowden, Mary

Mary Lowden was born into Acoma Pueblo on Christmas Day 1941. There isn’t much information available about her childhood or who she married but she was the granddaughter-in-law of Lupe Chavez and sister-in-law of Virginia Lowden. There were so many potters in the family as she was growing up it’s not possible to determine who had the greatest effect on Mary’s work. In those days the women and girls virtually all got together at someone’s house and made pottery together all day.

Mary made mostly polychrome jars, bowls, canteens and figures (mostly turtles). She branched into making storytellers around 1980, then went into making miniatures.
