Varela, Memo

Memo Varela is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. For several years he collaborated with Aracely Nunez, then he married her. Together, they mostly create brilliant polychrome jars and vases by painting bright designs over a glossy black graphite background. Their designs are based on designs they found on pot shards from the areas around the prehistoric ruins of Paquimé.
