Browning, Michele Tapia

Michele Tapia Browning of Santa Clara Pueblo is the daughter of LuAnn Tafoya and Sostence Tapia. Margaret Tafoya was her grandmother, Daryl Whitegeese is her younger brother. Like everyone else in the family, Michele was exposed to every aspect of making pottery the traditional way as she was growing up. She earned a name for herself with her traditional black and red jars, bowls and wedding vases. But she also painted watercolors, she sewed and embroidered and she liked to make pen & ink drawings.

Michele was a regular exhibitor at the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and the Santa Fe Indian Market for about 30 years. Some of her work was also included in a show at the Sid Deusch Gallery in Manhattan in 1985, along with works by Margaret Tafoya and 42 other Santa Clara potters.
