Rodriguez, Monico

Monico Alfredo Rodriguez Loya is a young potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. There’s virtually no information available about Monico but from his name and his work, it looks like he is a brother of Emiliano Rodriguez and son of Alfredo Rodriguez and Diana Loya.

Like the other males in the family, Monico seems to enjoy making sgraffito designs on black-on-white jars. His designs tend to incorporate ranching motifs: cowboys on horseback, longhorn steers, buzzards in the trees and log fences, corrals and gates.
