Naranjo, Nicolasa

Nicolasa Naranjo (1907-2002) was a potter from Santa Clara Pueblo. She was the niece of Margaret Tafoya: her mother was Margaret’s sister, Tomacita Naranjo. Some say it was Tomacita who taught Margaret how to make pottery but Tomacita didn’t survive the 1918 flu pandemic.

Nicolasa made mostly blackware with the occasional redware piece. She painted her own designs, often with a matte black organic paint.
