Quezada, Oscar Jr Gonzales

Born in 1980, Oscar Javier Gonzales Quezada is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. He’s the son of Oscar Corona Quezada and grandson of Consolacion Quezada. He probably learned how to make pottery through watching and working with his father and his grandmother. However, his design vocabulary is different from both.

Oscar was producing both polychrome and black pottery until 1997, when he went to work in a maquiladora (assembly plant). A few years later he went back to making pottery and by 2009, he had expanded his repertoire to include carved pottery and glossy black wedding vases.

More recently he seems to mostly paint Paquimé Revival designs in the Porvenir fashion and cover an entire piece with design. He also seems to like mixed clays for his base pot.

Oscar is married to Minerva Pedregon Ortiz, the sister of Gerardo and Enrique Pedregon. He usually signs his pots “Oscar Jr. G. Quezada”.
