Naranjo, Pauline
Pauline Gutierrez Naranjo (1931-1988) was the daughter of Luther Gutierrez and Lupita Naranjo of Santa Clara Pueblo. Her paternal grandparents were Lela and Van Gutierrez. She married Frank Naranjo and they had three children: Frank Jr., James and Stephanie.
Pauline learned how to make pottery through watching and working with her father and his sister, Margaret Gutierrez. After Luther died, Margaret and Pauline collaborated. Shortly after that, Pauline died and Margaret began collaborating with Pauline’s daughter, Stephanie Naranjo.
Keeping with family tradition, Pauline made mostly figures and sculptural pieces and she decorated them using the family’s polychrome color palette.
It’s recorded that she went to the Santa Fe Indian Market once, in 1980. In that single visit she won First and Second Prize awards for her figures. Then she went home and never went back again.
