Garcia, Reycita
“When you are worrying, working with clay – with Mother Earth – makes you relax.”
Reycita Garcia was a potter from Ohkay Owingeh. She was born in January 1931 to Emiliana Archuleta and Geronima Chavez Archuleta. Geronima made San Juan-style pottery and was a participant in the Santa Fe Indian Market for more than 60 years. Reycita was an exhibitor there with her for more than 40 of those years. Mother and daughter were also exhibitors at the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show for more than 15 years.
Reycita primarily made Potsuwi’i jars and bowls, storytellers and other figures, and nativity sets. She also did weaving, sewing and embroidery.
