Herrera, Reyes

Born in 1952, Reyes Duran Herrera is a potter from Tesuque Pueblo. Her parents were Joseph E. Duran and Ignacia Herrera Duran. Her grandparents were Benino Romero Duran and Epimenia Vigil Duran. She grew up watching them making figurative pottery and that’s what she learned how to make.

She said her parents made hundreds and hundreds of bowls, too, so many that beginning when she was 8 or 9, she was handed a brush and taught to paint. Since then, she has become known for her miniature bird figures and Rain Gods, and for bowls made with lids topped with animal figures. She was an exhibitor at Santa Fe Indian Market for more than 30 years, and an exhibitor at the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show for almost 20.
